AEO agency vs SEO agency is really a question about which problem you have. An SEO agency works to get your pages crawled, indexed and ranked in search results. An AEO agency works to get your business named, cited or recommended inside the answers that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews write. The two share foundations, so many companies need one team doing both. A few need a specialist added on top.

The short answer: which one do you need?

Run a ten-minute test before you hire anyone. Write the five questions a buyer would type or ask before choosing a company like yours. Put each into the assistants your market uses and into Google. Record three things per question: do you rank, are you named in the AI answer, and which sources does the answer cite.

  • You do not rank and you are not named. Start with SEO. Assistants that search the web draw on pages they can retrieve, so an unindexed or thin site has nothing to be quoted from.
  • You rank but are never named. This is the AEO gap. The page exists, yet the answer comes from other sources or describes you wrongly.
  • You are named, but wrongly or weakly. Also AEO: usually an out-of-date directory profile, an inconsistent fact, or no page that states the answer plainly.

On 4 November 2026 our own weekly tracker ran ten buyer questions about getting cited by AI assistants. It used a live web-search agent, so it is a search sample and not ChatGPT's own answer. GrowNexus appeared in 0 of 10 returned results and was named in 0 of 10 answers. The results were dominated by directories and "best agencies" lists. That is a useful picture of what AEO work actually targets: the lists and profiles the answers quote, not only your own site.

What an SEO agency actually does

A competent SEO agency owns four jobs: technical health (crawling, indexing, speed, canonicals), on-page relevance (titles, headings, copy matched to search intent), content that earns rankings, and links that signal authority. Its reporting is built on Search Console and analytics: impressions, clicks, average position, conversions.

That reporting has a blind spot. Google defines an impression as a link that was seen or potentially seen on a results page (Search Console Help), and it says nothing about whether an assistant used your page to write an answer. We see the gap in our own data. Across the 28 days to 3 November 2026, our Search Console total was 2,601 impressions and 28 clicks, and the informational AI-citation queries that rank between positions 1 and 7 brought almost no clicks. Rankings were fine for those queries. The answer was being given on the page that listed us.

What an AEO agency does that SEO does not

AEO, sometimes called GEO, is the same goal under two names: appear inside AI-written answers. The work that sits on top of SEO looks like this:

  1. A prompt-set baseline. A fixed list of buyer questions, run across the assistants, with every answer and cited source saved and dated. Without this there is nothing to improve against.
  2. Entity accuracy. Checking what each engine says about your business against the facts, then tracing wrong answers to the source: a directory, a review site, an old press mention.
  3. Source-level fixes and mentions. Correcting profiles, and earning inclusion on the comparison lists and publications the answers already cite for your category.
  4. Answer-first pages. Pages where the direct answer comes first, followed by the numbers, the named source and the caveat.
  5. Crawler access review. robots.txt, CDN and firewall rules for the AI crawlers, so you are not blocking retrieval by accident.
  6. Citation measurement. Mention and citation rates per prompt, repeated several times because answers vary from run to run.

Academic work supports the idea that content choices change visibility. The authors of the GEO paper, accepted to KDD 2024, report that their methods boosted visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses on their benchmark, and that the effect varied by domain (arXiv 2311.09735). That is a benchmark result, not a promise for your site, and any agency quoting it as a guarantee is misusing it.

Why the line between them is thinner than agencies admit

Google's own guidance for site owners is blunt. To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, and "there are no additional technical requirements" (Google Search Central, AI features and your website). The same page tells owners to keep crawling allowed in robots.txt and by any CDN, make content findable through internal links, and keep important content in text.

So for Google's AI features, SEO fundamentals are the entry ticket, and a vendor who claims a secret technique for them is selling mystique. The assistants outside Google, such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, do not publish how they choose sources, which is exactly why measurement matters more than theory. The honest position: the foundations are shared, the measurement and the third-party work are different.

When you need an AEO specialist on top of SEO

Hire the specialist layer when most of these are true:

  • Your category is one where buyers now ask an assistant for a shortlist before they search.
  • You already rank for your core terms, so more SEO is unlikely to change what the assistants say.
  • Directories, review sites and "best of" lists shape your market, and your entries are thin or inconsistent.
  • You sell to buyers abroad who research through assistants before they ever visit a site.
  • You need a monthly record of how you appear, not only a rankings report.

Stay with SEO first when the site has indexing problems, thin pages, slow performance, or no content that answers buyer questions. Fixing those is the cheapest AEO work there is, because assistants that search the web retrieve the same pages.

What the first month looks like under each

An SEO engagement usually opens with a technical crawl and a keyword map, so the first deliverables are a list of indexing and on-page fixes and a content plan tied to search demand. Progress shows up in Search Console over weeks, and Google notes that crawling can take anywhere from several days to several months after a change.

An AEO engagement opens with the baseline instead: the agreed prompt set, the answers and cited sources for each engine, and a diagnosis of why you are missing or misdescribed. The first fixes are usually small and fast to verify, such as unblocking a crawler, correcting a profile or rewriting one page so it answers the question in its first sentence. Then the same prompts run again, so the report can show what moved and what did not.

Neither first month should end with a promise. It should end with a dated record, a ranked fix list and an agreed way to measure the next one.

What to ask before you hire either

  1. Show me a baseline report. Dated, with the exact prompts, the engines used and the sources cited.
  2. How do you handle answer variation? The right reply is repeated runs and ranges. A single screenshot proves nothing.
  3. What will you not promise? A credible agency refuses to guarantee a citation or a ranking.
  4. Which fixes happen off my site? If the whole plan is blog posts, the third-party layer is being ignored.
  5. How do I measure it? Look for GA4 referral tracking from assistant domains plus a fixed prompt set. Referrals undercount, so ask how they treat branded search and direct visits that follow an assistant answer. We cover that attribution problem in how to connect AI citation share to client leads.
  6. Who does the work? Specialist, junior or a template.

How GrowNexus handles it

We run both from one team, because the site, the content and the technical fixes are shared. Our answer engine optimization service starts with a dated prompt-set baseline, traces wrong or missing answers to their source, fixes them, and re-runs the same questions every month. Ranking and technical work sits under SEO. We do not guarantee that you will appear in any assistant, and we say so before the engagement starts.

If you want to see where you stand first, the free AI visibility check takes your website and the questions your buyers ask, and returns the top fixes we would make.

Quick answers

Is an AEO agency different from an SEO agency?

Partly. Both depend on crawlable, indexed, useful pages, and Google says the same SEO fundamentals apply to its AI features. An AEO agency adds work an SEO retainer usually skips: recording what assistants say about you, correcting third-party sources they quote, and measuring citations prompt by prompt.

Do I need an AEO agency if my SEO is already good?

Not automatically. Test first: ask the assistants your buyers use the questions they would ask, and record whether you are named or cited. If you rank well and still never appear, the gap is usually entity facts, third-party mentions or missing direct answers, which is AEO work.

Can one agency do both AEO and SEO?

Yes, and for most small and mid-sized companies that is the better setup, because the two share the same site, the same content and the same technical fixes. Split them only when you already have a strong in-house SEO team and want a specialist for the assistant layer.

What should an AEO agency show me before I sign?

A written method, a sample baseline report with dates and the exact prompts used, a statement of how answer variation is handled, and a clear refusal to guarantee citations. If the proposal promises a ChatGPT ranking or a fixed number of mentions, treat that as a warning.
