Two thirds of your Google traffic now arrives from a surface with no query report and no rank tracking. We build the Discover, indexation, and revenue measurement your newsroom is missing.

Volatility recovery
Before teams bring us in, these are the constraints holding growth back.
Discover cannot be rank-tracked. There is no query report and no position to show, so newsroom priorities keep being set from Search data that now describes a minority of the traffic.
The headline tactics that used to work now cost traffic. Reporting through 2026 associates clickbait headline patterns with losses of roughly 30 to 60 percent of Discover traffic.
AI Overviews absorb the explainer. Evergreen pages that carried the revenue floor between news spikes keep their impressions and stop returning sessions, with reporting associating AI Overviews with roughly a 42 percent reduction in search clicks.
Revenue is earned per pageview, so a Discover volatility event is a revenue event. Without a Discover-specific baseline there is no way to explain the month to a board.
Traffic and revenue programs for news websites, digital magazines, and ad-monetised publishers. GrowNexus has run this scope for a high-volume financial-news publisher, where the engagement was measured on sessions and pageview revenue rather than on leads. The client is not named here under NDA.
The distribution base under news publishing moved. Google Discover now accounts for roughly two thirds of Google traffic to news publishers while Search has fallen to around a quarter, and about nine in ten publishers now take more traffic from Discover than from Search. Discover has no query report, no position, and nothing to rank-track, so most newsrooms are still optimising in fine detail for the smaller and shrinking surface.
Programs cover Discover eligibility and recovery, news schema and indexation, editorial velocity and topic authority, and what still converts once AI Overviews absorb the answer for explainer content. Google shipped its first standalone Discover core update between 5 and 27 February 2026, and recovery work begins by separating that volatility from everything else in the trend line rather than treating one drop as one cause.

A practical 0–2 benchmark for news sites and digital publishers: check Discover eligibility, images, headlines, authorship, measurement, and revenue context without promising traffic.

Discover now sends most publishers more traffic than Search, and it has no queries and no positions. What Google actually requires, why clickbait reversed, and how to measure a surface you cannot rank-track.

Date the drop, then rule out causes in order: eligibility, update, headlines, topic decay. What the February 2026 Discover core update actually targeted, and what Google says recovery really takes.

Impressions hold, clicks fall, and nothing is broken. Why standard reporting hides the erosion, what Google actually says about optimising for AI features, and which content still earns the visit.

We measured thirteen competing websites for AI search readiness on 1 August 2026 and re-checked them on 12 August. One published an llms.txt, eight had no structured data, and the only site restricting an AI crawler was one we built.

We re-analysed 18,151 cited pages across ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity. Relevance, structure and evidence were associated with deeper use, but they are not magic ranking factors.
FAQ
Start by separating the causes before fixing anything. A Discover drop is usually one of four things: a core or Discover-specific update, an eligibility problem such as missing large-image markup or a news indexation fault, a headline and thumbnail pattern that the system has started treating as clickbait, or simple topic decay where the stories that were feeding the feed stopped happening. Google ran its first standalone Discover core update from 5 to 27 February 2026 — initially for English-language users in the United States, with wider rollout following — so a trend line crossing that window needs to be read against it, and publishers outside that scope should be slower to blame it.
It can be influenced, but not ranked in the ordinary sense. There is no query and no position, so the levers are eligibility and quality signals: large-image markup on every article, clean news indexation, headlines that describe the story rather than withhold it, demonstrated expertise on a specific topic rather than broad coverage, and publishing consistency. We measure it as a share of sessions over time, not as a position.
Explainer content keeps earning impressions and stops earning sessions, which is why publishers see flat impressions and falling clicks on exactly the pages that used to hold the revenue floor. The response is to shift evergreen output toward what an overview cannot replace — original data, first-hand reporting, tooling, and opinion with a named author — and to stop measuring those pages on click-through alone.
We work with it. The engagement is measurement, technical setup, and editorial process — indexation, schema, headline and image standards, topic authority planning, and a reporting line the newsroom can act on. Commissioning and reporting stay with your editors, who know the beat better than any agency will.
On sessions by surface and on revenue per thousand pageviews, tracked together. Traffic mix matters as much as traffic volume, because Discover sessions and search sessions do not monetise identically, so a rising session count with a falling revenue figure is a real outcome that a traffic-only report hides.
It works the surface your traffic actually arrives on. The clear majority of Google's traffic to news publishers now comes through Discover rather than Search, and most publishers take more from Discover than from Search. Discover has no query report, no rank tracker, and no keyword plan — so a general agency's entire toolkit points at the smaller half of your traffic. Publisher work is indexation velocity, headline and image standards, topic authority, and Discover-specific diagnosis when volatility hits, none of which a standard search retainer covers.
We do not publish a standard figure. Discover exposure, beat competitiveness, publishing capacity, and current technical health all change what is achievable. Before work starts we record the existing split across Discover, Search, and direct along with revenue per thousand pageviews, then report movement against that baseline.
